If you don’t give too much attention to the belt you pick or you believe that they’re only there to keep your pants up, chances are you’re making mistakes. And if you think people won’t notice, think again. A bad belt can send the wrong message whether you’re on a date, at a formal event, or attending an interview. Not only will it look off, but it may even show that you didn’t put in the time and effort necessary to be dressed properly. That might seem harsh for such a small thing, but a belt has more of an effect on your overall look than you may think. Here are some essential tips for finding the perfect leather belt for you no matter the outfit.
Be Consistent with Your Colours
If you don’t know what colour belt you should have, this can easily be solved. Simply pick it in the same colour as most of your other leather garments and accessories. If that’s the only leather item you happen to own, any neutral colour will do. But if you’re going to wear it with a leather motorcycle jacket or leather shoes, then it only makes sense that you pick a matching colour.
Consistency is not only important when you pick the colour for the strap, however. You should also make sure that you look at the colour and material the buckle is made of and match it with any metal accessory you may be wearing, whether it’s a watch, ring, or tie bar.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t experiment with colours, however. You just have to be careful and know what you’re doing. Contrasting colours can help your outfit stand out. You even have belts with stamped images and varying colours. These can look great with the right outfit, but they won’t be as versatile as your black and browns. It is the purest, highest grade of leather that you can find. If you can’t get your hands on one, then top-grain or genuine leather belts are your second-best bet.
Choose the Right Length and Width
You also have to make sure that you pick a belt that fits. That might seem simple at first glance, but sizes aren’t always marked the same. You have some belts that will have a range, such as 28 to 32 inches, but others will only have one measurement. In those cases, it usually refers to the total length of the belt without the belt buckle. Know your measurements and pick a belt that will be appropriate for your body.
People often recommend that you pick a belt that is one to two inches longer than your actual size. You could also pick a belt that fits you perfectly and measure it to get an idea of what you need.

This is also why you should consider buying a belt with a removable buckle in case the original one chips, fades, or breaks.
You have to use the right buckle type for the occasion as well. Formal belts, for instance, will usually have a frame-style buckle that will tend to be flatter with a glossier finish. Buckles for casual belts are much more varied. You have plate-style buckles, O-rings and D-rings, box frames, and snap buckles, just to name a few. All of these will give a different look and serve a different purpose, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
Choose the Right Manufacturer
At the end of the day, the manufacturer will make the biggest difference in what you can expect. So, look at how their belts are produced. Hand punched belts have a character that mass-produced belts will not have. Handmade belts also tend to have more personality, and you’ll love knowing that no one has a belt that is exactly like yours.
